Kathmandu — Renowned Nepali sarod maestro Sudarshan Razopadhyay has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Kala Shiromani’ and ‘Kala Ratna’ awards at the 10th International Sangam Festival, held in the Indian state of Assam.
The awards were presented during the festival organised by Sri Sri Rajahuwa Satra in Guwahati. Razopadhyay received both honours from Vijay Kumar Gupta, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Assam.
The festival, held from 19–21 July at the Sri Sri Rajahuwa Satra Auditorium in Kumarpara, featured Rajopadhyay’s special sarod recital. Artists from various Indian states participated in the event, showcasing dance, music, instrumental performances and other cultural presentations. Competitions in different cultural disciplines were also organised as part of the festival.
Earlier this year, in May, Razopadhyay was also conferred the ‘Rashtriya Kalakshetram Samman’ (National Kalakshetram Honour) at the Bharat Utsav held in Pune, Maharashtra. Organised by the Akhil Lok Kala Cultural Organization, the festival brought together around 3,500 artists from across India, who presented Bharatanatyam, Kathak and a wide range of folk and classical art forms.
Razopadhyay has represented Nepal through sarod performances at numerous cultural events across India. In recognition of his contributions to music and the arts, he has received several distinguished honours, including the Surtal International Honour Award (2025), Vividhta Mein Ekta National Award (2020), Indian Besties Award (2019), and the Sangeet Manjari title conferred by the Government of West Bengal. In 2015, he was also awarded a Gold Citation by Surili Saanjh in Gujarat.
In Nepal, Razopadhyay won First Prize in the nationwide district-level music competition organised by Radio Nepal in 2002. He has also been honoured with the Shastra Samman (2018), the Save the Nation Award, and several other national recognitions for his contributions to music.
Beyond his concert performances, Razopadhyay has released numerous recordings in Nepali, Nepal Bhasa (Newar), and Hindustani classical music. His notable works include the Nepali albums Pal Pal, Pani Sari, and Tyo Raat; the Nepal Bhasa albums Nasala, Hasana, Chhanhuninhu, and Chhagu Matina; as well as the classical music recordings One Day Ragas, Soulful: Music for Meditation, and Surili Music Inn (2015), released in India.
